Why imperfection is indispensable in content marketing
Your target audience cries out for authenticity
While AI content inundates us with polished perfection, your target audience cries out for authenticity. Humanity, authenticity and serendipity are the trends of today. Younger audiences in particular want brands to leave out the polished edge and embrace imperfection.
Let’s face it: perfect is incredibly boring. Especially now, your audience is looking for sincere stories, transparency, a smile or surprise. On any channel.
AI content times
We produce more content than ever – millions of new pieces a day worldwide – and waste a lot on non-effective content. Forbes shows that 88% of customers do not return after a poor content experience. At the same time, there is a $600 billion market waiting for those who solve the content paradox. That paradox? More content, but limited attention. What once worked, works less well. Invest in quality, creativity and distribution. Avoid “plastic content” – nicely packaged but empty inside, focused on quick clicks instead of real connection and loyalty.
As far as we are concerned, the solution lies in smart AI integration without losing the human factor. Use AI as amplification. Today’s content specialist is the tastemaker who dares to choose, spots and shares people and stories, puts things in perspective and uses humor. Have guts, be hyper-relevant with personalization, choose unique angles and surprise with perspective. Invest in quality, creativity and human connection. Because imperfection is human – and human content wins, now and in the future. How to do that? With these 5 do’s for impactful content.
1. Experiment smartly with AI content
Don’t wait for the perfect moment or the perfect customer briefing. After all, there is no such thing. Experiment with new tools, improve your prompts or create an entire campaign with tools like ChatGPT, Copy.ai or Canva’s Magic Media for rapid content production and image generation. Make it manageable and measurable by attaching a goal to it: that way you can track progress more easily. Make tangible what is possible with recognizable output for the group. Exchange ideas, help colleagues who have questions or share the work from your joint AI Challenge. Together you are smarter than alone!
2. Take an omnistory approach
Ensure strong branding, integration of brand values and consistent content across all channels. A list of guidelines, content guiding principles, to make your brand story the common thread everywhere, will help you do this. Because: social algorithms want to know what you – as a company – stand for. Everything you create should have a clear purpose and structure. Just posting anything is no longer effective. Less chaos, more value. Above all, make smart use of the stories you already have, and optimize per channel.
3. Make content hyper-recognizable
Choose surprising insights or unexpected hooks. Play to personal needs. Show honesty and imperfection in your content. For example, share behind the scenes or blunders from the team to humanize your brand. Be transparent when things don’t go smoothly for a while. Even in a “real” friendship, pretending to be perfect is boring and not credible. So as a brand, make sure you don’t do this either. Tap into the curiosity of your target audience. People enjoy peeking in with you and learning something new about your brand. Make room in your content calendar for spontaneous posts, unexpected moments and surprise that are not polished to perfection.
4. Commit to co-creation
Involve your team, customers and community in content creation. Let them share their own stories and experiences and give them a place within the content strategy. Authenticity wins out over perfection. And by featuring real people, you make your content more credible and appealing. Make room in your content marketing for ideas from your target audience, for example through interactive workshops or online platforms.
5. Go for the 60/40 rule
Create a content calendar in which you produce 60% of the posts in advance for the concrete needs, questions and problems of your target group (think tips, explanations, customer stories). Reserve 40% for surprising, creative initiatives: think eye-catching actions, catch-ups, current events, trends, experiments with new formats or interactive campaigns. Evaluate regularly: which surprising posts score well? Dare to experiment more often with content that lies outside your comfort zone. Respond to current events: keep a list of relevant trends and news that you can quickly respond to with creative content.
